Bovana

My name is MZIWOXOLO Bovana and I belong to the amaNtlane clan. My father is THEMBILE (a.k.a Keke) and my grandfather is GARNAT Bovana. My great-grandfather is BHESI and my great-great-grandfather is SANDLANA. I am a descendent of BOVANA, who is my great-great-great-grandfather. To the amaXhosa nation (in this instance I will include amaMpondo as well), surnames are not known to be important and clan-names matter the most. This means that it is the clan-name that tells if I'm related to another person that the surname. In other words, similar surnames do not mean we are related but similar clan-names mean there is relatedness. It is believed that surnames are nothing else but first names of some great-grandfather. This I found to be true on two occasions: (1) My investigation of who my ancestors are led me to learn that my great-great-great-grandfather's name was BOVANA, my surname. (2) My elder brother met a few years ago a man whose clan-name was Ntlane, meaning there is relatedness with us, but whose surname was SANDLANA. In our family tree, Sandlana was the son of Bovana. I would be keen to know of other amaNtlane using the surnames SANDLANA and BHESI in order to see if their family trees converge to BOVANA.
